Think about how you protect a candle flame. You simply cup your hands around it, shielding it from the air. Our inner light works much the same way — it stays steady when we offer care, attention, and space.
In the yoga tradition, the heart is more than an organ — it is hṛdayam, the inner center where the soul/atma, awareness and wisdom reside. Our inner light is always available. Tending to it doesn’t mean denying the dark, rather noticing it without letting darkness overtake our hearts.
Practice gives us simple ways to do this. A longer exhale that softens the nervous system. Gentle movement that releases what’s been held too tightly. Considering an opposite position when stuck in or anger or indifference. Through these subtle shifts, the energetic system responds — creating space, ease, and a quiet sense of steadiness.
Keeping the light of the heart is a daily commitment. Again and again, we choose to release, to soften, and to trust that light will emerge from within.
Reflection
Take one slow breath in. As you exhale, let something soften. Ask yourself: What helps my inner light feel protected today? Even a subtle answer is enough.
